“PISCES – Frescoes from the Villa Stati-Mattei” (Restored and Colorized by the Pixartiko Collective): Echoes Beneath the Surface, Timeless as Water
With “Pisces”, the Pixartiko Collective reaches one of the most poetic and emotionally resonant points in its restoration of the Villa Stati-Mattei zodiac cycle. This image of two entwined fish, rendered with soft chromatic reverence and preserved vulnerability, invites the viewer to descend — not just into myth, but into introspection. It is a meditation on duality, flow, and the delicate threads that bind all living things.
The fresco presents the two fish in vertical opposition, their bodies curving in an almost yin-yang gesture of balance and motion. There is no rigidity here. The figures feel suspended in fluidity, caught not in stillness, but in perpetual drift. Their forms, though marked by the erosion of time, retain a remarkable vitality. The gesture of their tails, the softness of their bellies, the subtle gaze of their eyes — all suggest a life quietly enduring beneath centuries of pigment and plaster.
Pixartiko’s restoration is masterfully restrained. They allow the cracks and abrasions to remain visible, honoring the fragility of the fresco without erasing its age. The added coloration is minimal, respectful — a murky palette of mauves, umbers, and aquatic blues that evokes not only depth and water, but dream and memory. The use of a faint blush on one fish’s head adds a whisper of warmth, like a sigh from the deep.
Unlike the assertive symbols of Leo or Aries, Pisces breathes softly. It offers no center, no dominant axis. It asks not to be deciphered, but felt. And therein lies its power. It becomes a symbol of the unconscious, of emotional tide, of that which escapes language.
Through this work, the Pixartiko Collective reminds us that restoration is not always about clarity or completion. Sometimes it is about allowing the past to murmur again — softly, mysteriously, like the ripple of fins in ancient water.
“Pisces”, reborn in this thoughtful intervention, becomes not only a sign of the zodiac, but an emblem of sensitivity in a world that often forgets to listen.
