“CAPRICORN – Frescoes from the Villa Stati-Mattei” (Restored and Colorized by the Pixartiko Collective): The Myth in Motion, Anchored in Earth and Dream
With “Capricorn”, the Pixartiko Collective continues its inspired restoration of the Villa Stati-Mattei zodiac cycle by breathing new life into a mythological creature both hybrid and eternal. Here, the goat-fish — symbol of ambition, endurance, and the tension between material and spiritual ascent — reemerges from the faded centuries as a creature in full command of its dual nature.
The fresco presents Capricorn mid-motion, its horned head lowered in focus, its front legs poised in momentum, and its coiled aquatic tail spiraling with mythic elegance. The beast straddles the boundary between solidity and illusion. The lower half of the medallion, shaded in cool marine tones, anchors the figure in a world of dream and water. The upper half, rendered in warm, earthy terracotta, radiates solar heat and ambition. The composition becomes a symbolic terrain — half mountain, half ocean — through which Capricorn moves with unwavering intent.
Pixartiko’s intervention is marked by restraint and reverence. The texture of the original wall, with its erosions and fractures, remains intact, embracing the artwork’s historical scars as part of its voice. Yet the coloration revives its presence, lending contrast and clarity to the creature’s form. The palette — deep indigos, earthen reds, and soft ochres — does not simply restore what was lost. It reimagines the emotional truth of the fresco.
What stands out is the psychological depth of this Capricorn. It is not rendered as a fantasy beast, but as an emblem of internal complexity. Strength without noise. Purpose without spectacle. The image seems to move without moving, to breathe with a silence that speaks of ancient discipline.
Through this fresco, the Pixartiko Collective once again proves that restoration can be an act of interpretation, not merely preservation. They do not trap the work in nostalgia or freeze it in time. Instead, they allow the past to speak through the visual language of the present.
“Capricorn”, as reawakened here, is not just a symbol of the zodiac. It is a meditation on balance — between ambition and reflection, between earth and sea, between what endures and what transforms.
